Students already get out at 3:31. By extending the school day one hour that will mean we get out at 4:31. During this time of the year, it is daylight savings, meaning it gets darker faster. That means that by time school is out, it will be getting dark. Most students have after school programs that make them get out later. Also, we are in Chicago, a very dangerous city. No one is safe. There is more violence later in the day. Keeping in mind that most of the students in our school don't live in a good neighborhood and our school isn't in a good neighborhood; we shouldn't get out of school an hour late. Some students have to travel farther than others, too. By time they get home and it will be really late an really dark. I think that educators should think about the safety of the children when they discuss extending school for a hour.
Secondly, school should not be extending because it would deprive student of their time to do more necessary things. There are only 24 hours in a day; school takes up 7 1/2 of them. Educators have not thought about the other things that students have to do after school. Things such as the following: extra curricula activities or clubs, travel home, homework, chores, prepare for school the next day, and everyone knows teenagers love to get on social media. Everyone also needs 10 hours of sleep in order to function properly. Adding an extra hour to the school day will effect us in a negative way.
Most importantly, the students will lose interest. Both of the other factors also plays a part in this. The risk of more danger and lack of time to complete more nessecary things can make the students lose interest in school. Teachers or administrators will tell us that school isn't suppose to be fun. I agree, but it's suppose to be engaging; making the students learn in a more effective way. How can.we learn if we're tired and worrying about afterschool. Most students nowadays aren't forced to go to school. So them losing interest will mean lost of student and suffering attendance. It can affect the teachers paycheck and cause more shutdowns of schools. Extending school days will effect everyone negatively.
In conclusion, I do not think school days should be extended. Educators will regret possibly losing children because of violence at a later time. Losing students in extra curricular activities because of time management. And losing students in school because of those reasons and more. Students deserve to have an opinion, too. And I think every student will argue that the school days should not be extended.
